Backyard Birds of New Mexico Mug — Labeled Spotted Towhee, White-winged Dove, White-crowned Sparrow & Black-chinned Hummingbird (11oz)

Four birds you actually see from a porch in New Mexico — each one labeled by name.

Every bird on this mug is on the list of species that New Mexico volunteers in Project FeederWatch (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) report at their feeders. So it works as a small field guide you hold every morning, not a generic set of songbirds from somewhere else.

On this mug: Spotted Towhee · White-winged Dove · White-crowned Sparrow · Black-chinned Hummingbird

The Spotted Towhee has a black hood, rusty sides and white spots on its back. You usually hear it first — scratching backwards through the leaves under a shrub.

The White-winged Dove shows a bold white stripe along the wing, and has blue skin around the eye. It feeds on seed and also visits fruit and flowers.

The White-crowned Sparrow has a crisp black-and-white striped crown. It is mostly a winter visitor that feeds on the ground, so millet scattered under the feeder suits it best.

The Black-chinned Hummingbird is the summer hummingbird: the male's chin looks black until the light catches a thin purple band beneath it. A sugar-water feeder from spring into early fall brings it in.

How common are they, really? We went through the Cornell Lab's FeederWatch counts for New Mexico and wrote up the twelve birds New Mexico feeders report most often.
