There is a belief, held quietly across much of the country, that a cardinal in the yard is a visit. We are not going to tell you whether that's true. What we can say is why this bird carries it: cardinals don't migrate, they hold the same territory year after year, and they are the brightest thing in a yard in the dead of winter — which is usually when a family needs something to look at.

This collection is deliberately small and deliberately quiet. No long verses. No angels. No anniversary deadlines. Three words do more than thirty, because they leave room for the person to bring their own meaning.

If you are choosing for someone who already keeps a feeder, consider something that isn't about the loss at all — a print of their state's birds says I know what you look at in the morning, and for a lot of people that is easier to receive.
