Backyard Birds of Nevada Mug — Labeled House Finch, White-crowned Sparrow, Lesser Goldfinch & California Quail (11oz)

Four birds you actually see from a porch in Nevada — each one labeled by name.

Every bird on this mug is on the list of species that Nevada volunteers in Project FeederWatch (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) report at their feeders. So it works as a small field guide you hold every morning, not a generic set of songbirds from somewhere else.

On this mug: House Finch · White-crowned Sparrow · Lesser Goldfinch · California Quail

The House Finch is the streaky brown finch whose males wear a red head and breast. It usually arrives in small groups and settles in on a tube feeder of sunflower seed.

The White-crowned Sparrow has a crisp black-and-white striped crown. It is mostly a winter visitor that feeds on the ground, so millet scattered under the feeder suits it best.

The Lesser Goldfinch is the small western goldfinch — bright yellow underneath, with a dark back. A nyjer (thistle) feeder is the surest way to bring it in.

The California Quail has a forward-curling plume and a scaled belly. Coveys walk in together and feed on seed on the ground, usually close to cover.

How common are they, really? We went through the Cornell Lab's FeederWatch counts for Nevada and wrote up the twelve birds Nevada feeders report most often.
