Backyard Birds of Arizona Mug — Labeled Gambel's Quail, Gila Woodpecker, Anna's Hummingbird & Lesser Goldfinch (11oz)

Four birds you actually see from a porch in Arizona — each one labeled by name.

Every bird on this mug is on the list of species that Arizona volunteers in Project FeederWatch (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) report at their feeders. So it works as a small field guide you hold every morning, not a generic set of songbirds from somewhere else.

On this mug: Gambel's Quail · Gila Woodpecker · Anna's Hummingbird · Lesser Goldfinch

The Gambel's Quail wears a black topknot that bobs as it walks. It comes in family groups that run in on foot to pick up seed scattered on the ground.

The Gila Woodpecker is the zebra-backed woodpecker of the desert, often nesting in saguaros. It takes suet and fruit, and is not shy about trying the hummingbird feeder.

The male Anna's Hummingbird has a head that flashes rose-pink when he turns toward the light. In much of the low desert it stays all year, so a sugar-water feeder is worth keeping up through the winter.

The Lesser Goldfinch is the small western goldfinch — bright yellow underneath, with a dark back. A nyjer (thistle) feeder is the surest way to bring it in.

How common are they, really? We went through the Cornell Lab's FeederWatch counts for Arizona and wrote up the twelve birds Arizona feeders report most often.
