Backyard Birds of Alaska Mug — Labeled Chickadee, Steller's Jay, Common Redpoll & Red-breasted Nuthatch (11oz)

Four birds you actually see from a porch in Alaska — each one labeled by name.

Every bird on this mug is on the list of species that Alaska volunteers in Project FeederWatch (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) report at their feeders. So it works as a small field guide you hold every morning, not a generic set of songbirds from somewhere else.

On this mug: Black-capped Chickadee · Steller's Jay · Common Redpoll · Red-breasted Nuthatch

The chickadee here is the Black-capped Chickadee. It takes one seed at a time and flies off with it, so it makes a lot of trips — and it is usually among the first birds to find a new feeder.

The Steller's Jay is the dark, crested jay of western forests — charcoal head and crest, deep blue body. It is bold at a feeder and will carry off peanuts and sunflower seed to hide for later.

The Common Redpoll is a small, streaky finch with a red cap and a black chin. It turns up in winter flocks — often dozens at a time — on nyjer and sunflower chips.

The Red-breasted Nuthatch is the little blue-grey bird with a black eye-stripe and rusty underparts that walks headfirst down tree trunks. Suet and sunflower bring it in.

How common are they, really? We went through the Cornell Lab's FeederWatch counts for Alaska and wrote up the twelve birds Alaska feeders report most often.
