Eastern Bluebirds declined sharply across the eastern United States in the last century, and recovered largely because ordinary people started putting nest boxes on fence posts. It is one of the few conservation stories that happened in back gardens.

What the drawing gets right. Deep blue above, rusty orange throat and breast, clean white belly — and the posture: upright on a low perch, watching the grass, ready to drop straight down onto an insect.

If you want them in your own yard: a box facing open lawn, away from the house, and mealworms rather than seed. They will not come to a seed feeder.
