The Carolina Wren is rusty brown with a bold white eyebrow and a tail held cocked upright. It doesn't migrate, doesn't quiet down, and will nest in anything left on the porch — a boot, a wreath, a flowerpot you meant to move.

The Eastern Bluebird declined sharply last century and came back because people put up nest boxes. Face a box at open lawn, away from the house, and put out mealworms.
