The birds outside your Ohio window — not somebody else's.

Most bird mugs show a generic set of songbirds that could have come from anywhere. This one shows the Ohio regulars, each illustration labeled with the bird's name, so the mug doubles as a small field guide you hold every morning.

On this mug: Northern Cardinal · Blue Jay · American Goldfinch

The Northern Cardinal is Ohio's state bird, and it earns it — cardinals don't migrate, so the reddest thing in an Ohio yard in February is a bird. Look for the pointed crest and the thick orange-red bill; the female wears the same bill in warm buff.

The Blue Jay is the loud one. Blue above with a black necklace across the throat, it carries peanuts off to cache them and comes back for more within the minute.

The American Goldfinch is the reason people call Ohio winters drab and are wrong. Summer males are lemon-yellow with black caps; by December the same bird has faded to olive-buff with black wings, and half the state reports it as a different species.

A good gift for someone who keeps a feeder, and a better one for someone who has started asking what the birds are called.
