The chickadee here is the Black-capped Chickadee. It takes one seed at a time and flies off with it, so it makes a lot of trips — and it is usually among the first birds to find a new feeder.

The male American Goldfinch is lemon-yellow in summer and a dull olive in winter — the same bird, just changing clothes. A nyjer (thistle) feeder is the surest way to bring it in.

The Mourning Dove is the soft, cooing one that feeds on the ground under the feeder, picking up whatever the others drop.

The Blue Jay announces itself before it lands. It carries off peanuts and acorns to bury, which is why it empties a tray feeder faster than anything else in the yard.
