The chickadee here is the Carolina Chickadee. It takes one seed at a time and flies off with it, so it makes a lot of trips — and it is usually among the first birds to find a new feeder.

The Northern Cardinal doesn't migrate, so the pair in your yard in July is usually the pair in your yard in January. Sunflower seed keeps them coming.

The male American Goldfinch is lemon-yellow in summer and a dull olive in winter — the same bird, just changing clothes. A nyjer (thistle) feeder is the surest way to bring it in.

The Carolina Wren is the loud little brown bird with the white eyebrow and the cocked tail, and it stays through the winter.
